1. 26 July. Bodrum to Keci Buku
Only a little sailing on this trip - the first part over towards Kos had us thinking we would have a busy day, but after a an hour of doing 7 kts in a nice 16-18 knot wind, it died away. There is nearly always a westerly wind up the gulf of Hisaronu, but we only managed about 45 minutes doing 3 or so knots downwind. Very disappointing.
We went straight down to the Kadir Restaurant Quay to be greeted by Umit and Kremet and their daughters Kardair and cheeky little Kismet.
The first problem was the
windlass. The negative wire was burning out and
crumbling away. I think it wasn’t
great (waster ingress?) when we moved it from the chain locker but don’t
think my crimping was 100% either. It didn’t help that we had the chain of a
great big motor yacht over us one morning. He wouldn’t move, so forced us to
pull our anchor out from beneath his. To be fair they were helping – the
captain and his boat boy swimming down to shift the anchor (the boat boy was
swimming, not the skipper). The wires were so bad I was frightened to touch
them in case they parted for good!
Anyway, we took it off the
deck and hauled it into Aydin’s in Marmaris on the dolmus. As you may
recall, we didn’t know much about the windlass and
the investigation we did do led us to believe it was only 400watts. So we
asked if the motor could be beefed up at the same
time.
Well, they took it apart and had a look, renewed all the wires and told us –
‘motor is perfect – at least 800 watts’ ‘ good as new’ and ‘hardly used’ –
which makes us think that perhaps the motor had been replaced at some point.
So all done for 85 ytl and we were worried we may have to buy a new one.
The next problem is that we had found a leak of diesel – not much – but they don’t get better by themselves, do they! So, we took the saloon apart to get at it – its glassed in on 3 sides, so the only way to see was to get it out. Oh joy! Well, we eventually called the Cavalry – Cetin Marin and they got it out, but the bad news is that it has to be replaced. So we’re sweltering with no engine either!
Divanty offered to take us out sailing one day for a breath of air
and a swim. Thank you Davina and Ants!
So, we now have no port settee in the saloon and tools and other assorted mess in the forepeak. The new tank has been for a first fitting, but needs some adjustment. Luckily Mehmet is a perfectionist and won't be satisfied by anything less than perfect!
